Welcome to the Manitoba Library Trustees Association (MLTA) Website

After over forty years, our goal and reason for existing remains “To promote and foster the advancement of public library service.” MLTA seeks to serve the needs of its membership – the trustees appointed to local library boards throughout the province.  MLTA is committed to the future of Manitoba through effective library policy development. As a voice for Manitoba library trustees, MLTA represents the interests of patrons and supporters of public libraries.  The MLTA promotes and fosters the effectiveness of public library boards by leadership in communications, advocacy and support of trustee education. We welcome all comments and suggestions. Check us out on a regular basis for updates and new photos. Happy reading. Happy navigation.

During 2015 – 2017, MLTA was part of the Manitoba Libraries Working Group that was formed to investigate the creation of a stronger and more cohesive library organization within Manitoba. A proposal was developed that would see the Manitoba Library Association (MLA) become an association made up of Divisions of the Manitoba library associations that have joined MLA.

At the MLTA AGM on November 27, 2017 our membership approved the following motion: “That the MLTA agrees, in principle, to dissolve as a stand-alone organization in order to become a Division of a reformed Manitoba Library Association, provided that the transition and operating terms are amenable. Dissolution and reformation is expected to take effect on January 1, 2018.” MLA bylaws are being revised to reflect the formation of MLTA and MALT Divisions, and a financial and transition plan are underway to amalgamate these Associations. Final approval of the new restructured MLA will be at its AGM at the end of May 2018. In the meantime, an interim 6-month Board is in place for January 1 – May 31, 2018.
